about
I am a self taught visual artist, based near Edinburgh, who makes pared back, expressive paintings and drawings. I paint people as I experience them - as fragile, full of gaps and with broken edges.
Working predominantly from old family photographs, with a muted palette of watercolours and oils, I create partial, unfinished portraits by constantly setting myself creative problems that no one else has asked me to solve. Can I paint with oils on raw canvas? Is it still a painting if most of the canvas is bare? How few marks are needed to express deep emotion? My art practiceis an ongoing conversation between my inner yearning and the world’s refusal to stop turning. It is an embodied attempt to accept the passage of time by gently acknowledging those who have gone ahead of me and to cherish my own, small life.
My art is a quiet invitation to my fellow humans to think less and feel more. To be curious about the vulnerability of being mortal. And to relish their own brief moment in the sun.
